Application
If interested in becoming a Paducah Police Officer, apply above through the online application when applications are being accepted or call the City of Paducah - Human Resources Department at 270-444-8540. Members of ethnic minority groups and females are strongly encouraged to apply.
What to attach to your application:
- A certified copy of your birth certificate or passport showing you are at least 21 years old. (If United States citizenship is not confirmed by your birth certificate, include additional documentation to show citizenship.
- A copy of your driver's license.
- A copy of your high school diploma or transcript.
If you are applying as a lateral officer, please also submit:
- In-state lateral applicants should submit a copy of their POPS certificate and have proof of at least one year of full-time law enforcement experience.
- Out-of-state lateral applicants should also apply for reciprocity with the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, Then they should submit the documents they receive back from KLEC after completing their reciprocity application along with proof of at least on year of full-time law enforcement experience.
Hiring Process 
After submitting the application and once it is determined that you meet the minimum qualifications required of a Paducah Police Officer, you will be placed on the list for the next testing session.
The testing process involves a physical agility test and a written test, administered consecutively on the same day. Those who receive a passing score on these exams will be scheduled as soon as possible for an interview. Based upon your testing and interview results, as well as the number of vacancies in the Department, an investigation into your background is initiated. Former employers, co-workers, friends, and neighbors will be asked about your character and integrity. There will also be checks of your criminal history, traffic record, and credit report.
Hopefully, after a comprehensive review of your application file, you will now be among those eligible finalists to be selected as Paducah Police Officer Recruits.
Police Officer Applicants may be disqualified during the selection process when it is determined that the applicant is not qualified or suitable for the job.
The Academy
Paducah Police Department Recruits and Telecommunicators attend the Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) located in Richmond, KY. For telecommunicators, the Academy is 4 weeks long, and for recruits, the Academy is 20 weeks long. Both telecommunicators and peace officer recruits will train with others from throughout the state during this time.
It became the first Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA)-accredited public safety training academy in the United States and Canada in 2003. It was also the first public safety training academy to be designated a CALEA Flagship Agency in 2006. DOCJT became dually accredited when it received accreditation from the International Associated of Continuing Education and Training (IACET) Commission in 2013.
