The latest Ponderings from Paducah, written by Public Works Director Chris Yarber, announces that the City will hold a household bulk item collection event this fall. Ponderings from Paducah – Household Bulk Item Collection Program Returns this Fall - A Convenient Way to Clear Out Before the Holidays

As the holiday season approaches and family gatherings are scheduled, you may be thinking about cleaning out closets, making room for new furniture, or simply getting rid of a few larger items that have been taking up space. This fall, residents will have a convenient opportunity to do just that through the Household Bulk Item Collection Program.

The program, offered by the Paducah Public Works Department, allows eligible residential households to place up to three large household items at the curb at no additional cost during their assigned collection week. There’s no registration or scheduling required.

And residents have already told us they appreciate the service. Through a feedback survey, 473 people shared their thoughts about March’s pilot program. Overall, 97 percent said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the collection process. Most tellingly, 99 percent of respondents said they were likely or very likely to use the service again if offered in the future.

That feedback helped bring the program back this fall.

Collection will take place over four weeks, based on regular garbage collection days: households with Tuesday garbage routes will have bulk items collected the week of October 26, Wednesday routes the week of November 2, Thursday routes the week of November 9, and Friday routes the week of November 16. Items should be placed at the curb by Sunday evening before your assigned week because crews will begin collecting items as soon as Monday.

Furniture, mattresses, couches, and qualifying large appliances are among the items that can be collected. Refrigerators and air-conditioning units must have a visible coolant-free certification tag.

Remember, the limit is three items per household, but items such as a mattress and box springs will count as one. Items should be placed at the curb or roadside—not in alleys, on sidewalks, or behind fences. Prohibited materials and piles larger than three items will not be collected.

With the holidays just around the corner, this is a great opportunity to clear some space and start the season with a little less clutter.
